Music of the incomplete
For this 48 pages art- and songbook I invited musician and guitar composer Mauro Pawlowski to write for each work a musical piece on guitar. Quickly after a studio visit on March 8, 2018 seventeen sharp-edged ostinatos were squeezed straight out his strings, seventeen compositions written as loops. In theory it should be exact repetition, but in common usage it’s specked with variation and development, and that’s what we’re going for, the non-metronomic - as true rhythm isn’t metronomic - and incomplete loop. Ostinato derives from Italian and means stubborn; we both like a stubborn mentality, as long as there’s a lot of variation, development and inconsequence in the stubbornness!
The decision to have the music written as a standard music score, even though neither me or Mauro are skilled to read from the paper fluently and play, is made to make the music as open as possible to anyone and for any instrument. I did study the scores and translated them to tablatures, as I like to play them on a classical guitar, and entered the palace of Mauro’s musical vision on the works during some nightly kitchen table sessions.
This songbook is a first collaboration in song writing, maybe even a first collaboration in song writing inspired by art, should Google this, as more often the visual art gets inspired by music, so it’s a kind of small mirror, and at the same time also a mirror in a mirror, as lot of the artworks are again inspired by music, like a reversed source.

When you see every reproduction of an artwork as a form of iconoclasm, I thought why not exaggerate a bit and depict all the works as simple black and white line drawings, at least I take over some control of the damage done to representation of the works, and also because it’s about the music here, the work should be a bit pushed back, or at least at the same visual level in this book. Maybe that’s why, I don’t know but I like it.
